This is the wine I’ve been waiting so long for an opportunity to try, as long as I could remember… White usually isn’t my first choice. But this time I’ve found the best excuse to pop it - A birthday-cum-gathering BBQ!

A decent spread of honey marinated chicken wings, beef, chicken and mutton satay, otah, sotong balls, curry, fried bee hoon, grilled fresh tiger prawn and marshmallows; I’m sure will be the best and most grueling ‘litmus test’ for the Rising Star Saugvinon Blanc.

Served chilled, the Rising Star let off fragrant of passion fruit, yet smells a little like rock mellow. A bigger whiff from the glass somewhat reminiscent raw cut grass though certainly not to the real extent. The light yellowish colour hue typically suggest that this Sauvignon Blanc was grown under minimal sunlight, as one could possibly expect of wine from New Zealand. There was little surprise when I gulp down a small mouthful which reveals scents of subtle passion fruits juice and rock mellow. As the taste diffuse into my mouth, the finish displays a distinct aroma of guava, which surprises my taste bud.

Unfortunately, the BBQ food when paired with the wine seemed to have over powered most of the aromatic scents, especially when paired with curry. On the positive note, the off-dry Sauvignon Blanc whisks off the thick oily food bringing some respite…for second round of serving.

On the whole, Rising Star is a pretty appealing wine. At a price below $30, this is definitely a fantastic buy. Unfortunately, this wine is no longer on sale at Denise the Wine Shop. Though pairing with BBQ doesn’t seem like a good idea, I would recommend drinking it on its own or paired with something lighter like chicken rice.
