When I first started to learn about wine some 8 years ago, I was stumbled by the variety of terminologies tagged onto the label of french wine -"AOC", "Vin de Pays", "Grand Vin De Bordeaux", "Grand Cru Classé" - quite a a mouth full for someone who knows nothing about French.
I am sure anyone of you who has the slightest contact with French wine came across people synonymously calling French wine Bordeaux wine. Well, technically this is incorrect as I was being politely pointed out by a Wine Sommelier. Strictly speaking Bordeaux wine can only be called "Bordeaux wine" if it comes from the Bordeaux region in France. The probable reason why French wine are so commonly being addressed as Bordeaux wine could be because Bordeaux is the largest wine producing region in France (~119,800 ha) and its reputation were built upon the Cru Classé wine. In any case, the purpose of this article is not to dwell into all these details. What I would like to share with everyone here today is the list of Bordeaux Classification of 1855. Historically the classification only include top wines from Medoc (a sub-region in Bordeaux) with the exception of Château Haut-Brion which is from Graves (another sub-region in Bordeaux) and there are basically 5 classifications. So far I've not seen any of these wine appear in mainstream supermart like, Giant or Sheng Siong. But you would commonly find them in Carrefour or Liberty supermarket. In fact, I discovered on my latest trip to NTUC at AMK Hub that some of these labels are getting commonly available. Most of the First and Second Growth wines cost a premium to own. If you are really have a deep pocket to spend on some of these wines, you can check out Crystal Wine, Vinum Fine Wine Merchant or artofwine. If you feel generous to share, please do not hesitate to drop me a line ...and wait..don't forget to print this out and bring a copy of you where ever you go! sign, Wine@Leisure Bordeaux Classification of 1855 First Growths (Premier Grand Cru) Château Lafite Rothschild (Pauillac)Château Latour (Pauillac)Château Mouton Rothschild (Pauillac)Château Margaux (Margaux)Château Haut-Brion (Pessac, Graves) Second Growths (Deuxièmes Crus) Château Brane-Cantenac (Margaux)Château Rauzan-Gassies (Margaux)Château Lascombes (Margaux) Château Rauzan-Ségla (Margaux)Château Durfort-Vivens (Margaux)Château Pichon Longueville Baron (Pauillac)Château Pichon Longueville Comtesse de Lalande (Pauillac)Château Cos d'Estournel (St.-Estèphe)Château Montrose (St.-Estèphe) Château Léoville-Las Cases (St.-Julien)Château Léoville-Poyferré (St.-Julien)Château Léoville Barton (St.-Julien)Château Gruaud-Larose (St.-Julien)Château Ducru-Beaucaillou (St.-Julien) Third Growths (Troisièmes Crus) Château Boyd-Cantenac (Margaux)Château Cantenac-Brown (Margaux)Château Desmirail (Margaux)Château d'Issan (Margaux)Château Ferrière (Margaux)Château Giscours (Margaux)Château Kirwan (Margaux)Château Malescot St. Exupéry (Margaux)Château Marquis d'Alesme Becker (Margaux)Château Palmer (Margaux)Château Lagrange (St.-Julien)Château Langoa Barton (St.-Julien)Château La Lagune (Ludon)Château Calon-Ségur (St.-Estèphe) Fourth Growths (Quatrièmes Crus) Château Marquis de Terme (Margaux)Château Prieuré-Lichine (Margaux)Château Pouget (Margaux)Château Duhart-Milon-Rothschild (Pauillac)Château Lafon-Rochet (St.-Estèphe) Château La Tour Carnet (St.-Laurent)Château Branaire-Ducru (St.-Julien) Château Beychevelle (St.-Julien) Château Saint-Pierre (St.-Julien)Château Talbot (St.-Julien) Fifth Growths (Cinquièmes Crus) Château Cantemerle (Macau)Château Dauzac (Margaux) Château du Tertre (Margaux)Château Batailley (Pauillac)Château Clerc-Milon (Pauillac)Château Croizet Bages (Pauillac)Château d'Armailhac (Pauillac) Château Haut-Bages-Libéral (Pauillac)Château Haut-Batailley (Pauillac)Château Grand-Puy-Lacoste (Pauillac)Château Grand-Puy-Ducasse (Pauillac)Château Lynch-Bages (Pauillac)Château Lynch-Moussas (Pauillac)Château Pontet-Canet (Pauillac)Château Pédesclaux (Pauillac)Château Cos Labory (St.-Estèphe)Château Belgrave (St.-Laurent)Château de Camensac (St.-Laurent) |
