Last time I had a Domaine De Chevalier was about a year ago. That was for the 2004 vintage year and was the first Domaine De Chevalier I ever had. It was impressively good with full and creamy texture coupled with big generous fruits to end with. Something I never had for a while in a French wine. So when I saw the 2002 vintage at Wine Culture sale, my mind was set on picking it home. Domaine De Chevalier prides in its consistent quality of wine and I couldn’t agree more on that. Although overall I would prefer the 2004 vintage for the richer and fuller wine, the 2002 vintage wasn’t far off. The intensely dark inky Chevalier has nose of oak, spices and plum fruits rounded up with some logan fruit to freshen up the aroma. In the mouth, the wine is expectantly smooth, creamy and silky. Very elegant in texture while rich with blackcurrant and red cherries on the palate, it slowly exudes fragrance of tobacco leaves and intense cassis with a subtle mineral note finishing. Overall, Oliver Bernard would be happy to hear that this wine is definitely as consistent as his later vintage. I would love to get my hand on more Domaine De Chevalier, but unfortunately, their 2000 and 2005 vintage are quite highly priced, which means that I would probably miss out on some great quality produced here.
