Last week, I tried my luck on an $18.50 (Astica Merlot-Malbec 2007) wine and believe that was the lowest I could go for a decent bottle of Red. Just the week after, I broken record by betting my faith on a bottle of French wine that cost an unbelievable $16.50. This wine was released at Carrefour last weekend and stocks was clearing at lightining speed as I could see some folks stacking 2 to 3 cases on their trolley. As a wine enthusiast, I felt I should lose out on such great bargain and grabbed my share of ... 1 bottle. As it turn out, that was one big regretted I've made which I slapped my wrist for holding back instead of grabbing more! Before anyone jump the gun, let me reiterate that this is not any Grand Cru that was clearing on the cheap. In fact this wine is only classified humbly under the Appellation Medoc Controlee. Despite its humble background, Les Fiefs Medocains 2006 aims high and offer big. This wine is subtle on the nose with soft peppery fragrance mixed with scents of sandalwood and ripe berry fruits. Its medium-bodied characteristics portray a shy wine that deceptively carry notes light spicies and minerals that unwrap into generous aroma of dark cherries and red dates on the palate. The acidicty was well balanced and brought a good overall grip in the mouth without the feel of a young tannic wine. The finishing may not be a bombastic one, but it definitely lingered long enough till my next sip. Les Fiefs Medocains 2006 goes especially well with white meat that is cooked in sweet sauce or served with chilli as dipping. If eaten broiled or grilled, the wine tend to bring out the inherent raw taste of the white meat. For the price and quality, there is no excuses I can come with with to fault this wine. If you are a beginner, Les Fiefs Medocains is a very good choice to start off with until you've acquired a more acute taste for fuller bodied wine. If you are looking for wedding wine, I would recommend making a trip to Carrefour to see if they are still available. This wine is definitely a good match for chinese banquet while the price is too good to be missed.
