While I was thinking of a good wine to serve some of the VIPs during my wedding nite, the Caves Rd Shiraz 2005 came to my mind. Although this wine isn't very cheap, I know I won't go wrong sticking to it because its quality surpasses many other wines in its range and certainly my guest won't feel that I am serving them cheap skate wine. Honestly I felt this wine deserved to be priced towards the $30-$35 range. Caves Rd Shiraz was actually my 2nd encounter with this wine though the first time round I had not get about blogging the tasting notes. In fact, the region and the winery name probably disclosed that this wine shared the same parentage with its more expensive Heathfield Ridge Shiraz 2002. Suffice to say, Caves Rd Shiraz bears several similarities to Heathfield Ridge Shiraz that you might mistaken as the same. And if it does cross your mind that Caves Rd is probably a lesser half of the twin, then you have totally mistaken. Contrary to the notion, Caves Rd Shiraz resembles its expensive sibling so much so that it have seem to have inherited the grape, terroir and characteristic of Heathfield Ridge. However, up to this point it distinctly differentiates itself with a fuller flavour and robust concentration of rich dark berries that carries scents of white pepper with sexy scent of sandal wood thst slowly reveals in your breath. Finishing was equally superb, leading to smooth, spicy finishing. Hoinestly, it wouldn't be pair to compare both wine shoulder to shoulder. Nevertheless, if you are attracted to wine that is more robust in concentration and carries more youthful characteristics, then Caves Rd Shiraz would appeal to you better than the more mellowed but seductive Heathfield Ridge 2002. And the good news - My VIPs like this wine very much especially when paired with the Peking Duck. Slurp...
