3 years ago I drank my first Glaetzer Shiraz 1996 vintage and fell totally in love with it. From then on, I had always used this wine a yardstick for any Australian Shiraz that I drink. So far few were able to par up to its elegance of smooth sexy expression that beholds a rich concentration of jammy plum fruits packed within this full-bodied wine.

3 years later, on a wine tasting visit to Cellar Deluxe, I was introduced to Heathfiled Ridge Shiraz, that completely meet the match of Glaetzer.

Headfield Ridge belongs to the Tidswell family which owns the Adelaide hotels, their history dates back to 1858. In 1994, they decided to convert their family property into vineyard. Today it covers roughly 115 hectares along Limestone Coast characterize by terra rossa soils which makes it suitable to grow consistently high quality grapes.

Although their history in winemaking is not considered long, their wine, I must profess in my humble opinion could beat some of the old timers hands down.

I was very impressed during the initial wine tasting. According to Daniel owner of Cellar Deluxe, the wine had breathed for an hour before I tasted it. So I could imagine the amount of fruits packed in the bottle desperate to break free.

The Heathfield Ridge 2002 Shiraz which I tasted carried rightfully all the characteristic of Glaetzer except that it is creamier and more delicious mouth-filling which fits my preference better. Heathfiled displays lots of gracefulness and femininity albeit under the complex full-bodied nature that bashes my taste buds with waves and waves of sweet subtle black cherries, plum and red dates that unfolds with suspense. As if to tease me further, some white peppery notes add up to the finishing bringing some respite. I swear the taste lingered through the night. Now you don’t have to pay big money for big wine. Simply drooling!
