I was never a fan of fortified wine really... This weekend, my pal bought a bottle of Rutherglen wine from Wine Connection and invited me down to drink with him while he bitch over that darn job he was in. Oh Well, I thought, maybe its worth the while afterall since I haven't the foggiest idea about this winery so I might as well try. Of course the bottomline is alcohol gets me perk up and...I am sucker for free wine! Honestly, my pal was a serious and no nonsense guy so the least I would expect from him was to lifted the bottle of wine towards me and cheekily stick his finger at the word "contain egg white". Immediately the words "sticky, slimy and eggy smell" ran through my thoughts. Heck, I have heard coffee shop uncles boasted about how the mug of stout with enriched egg yolk had boosted their libido. But I have no idea that such practices had reached out to the shore of our western counterpart. After motioning the drink towards me, I muster up and took the sip... The taste of this wine was pretty staight with little character though acidity was rather prominent. Truthfully, both of us agreed that we did taste the presence of egg and it became rather distinct in our breath after we had downed towards the halfway point of the bottle. The finishing was short to say the least and it leave a slightly unpleasant stickiness in our mouth. Overall this wine is a disappointment. For $30 I would not hesitate to choose a Trivento Malbec or Cabernet Sauvignon (also retail at Wine Connection). The only consolation is that it provided the needed entertainment we had boozing over the Friday evening, while the idea of 'egg white' to boost libido made us chuckle through the night. You can click on the Winery name in this article if you are keen to find out more about this wine. As it appears the Rutherglen wine is formed by a group of 19 wineries in association. And guess what? The white egg was meant to create a silky smooth sensation on our palate, not to boost libido as we had *Sheepishly* thought...
